When it comes to appreciating costume design, you could say that a similar high standard is kept not just for today’s film-adoring public but also for everyone else who looks to the cinema for fashion inspiration. As costume design plays a vital role in the believability of bringing a story from film script to the silver screen, it doesn’t take a seasoned film critic to grasp if the wardrobe works or not.

1. Clueless (1995)

Director: Amy Heckerling
Starring: Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Stacy Dash, Donald Faison

From grunge-inspired, rugged flannel button-downs and tattered jeans, to crop-tops and overalls, the 90’s offbeat and original fashion styles are still recognizable and relevant to this day. Among the many films that tried to capture the fashion pulse of that era, none was as iconic and successful as the 1995 American coming-of-age comedy flick Clueless.

The film has had an influence on fashion designers as well, some of whom have used the costume design as inspiration for their runway shows. Vogue reported that industry heavyweight Alexander Wang paid homage to his favorite film in his 2014 spring collection of notable ruffled blouses and argyle twinsets.

2. The Terminator (1984)

Director: James Cameron
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Paul Winfield

When The Terminator came out in theaters back in the day, everybody wanted to be as cool and as tough-as-nails as the cyborg assassin himself. Of course, a key wardrobe piece that put Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character among the most feared of all Hollywood villains is the biker jacket. The New York Post stated that the Terminator biker jacket is considered one of cinema’s most iconic garments.

As far as making statements go, The Terminator franchise made a similar impact in the gaming universe. From the arcade, NES, Nintendo, Sega, Game Boy, X-Box, to the Sony PlayStation, Den of Geek lists the many games that have come from this much-loved science-fiction and action series. The online gaming industry has also taken advantage of the franchise’s far-reaching influence with the slot game Terminator 2 available on the digital platform Slingo. The game uses familiar elements from the film with the famous biker style front and center. With Terminator 6 bringing back Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton (who stared in T1 & T2) we can surely expect to see the famous biker jacket return to our screens.

Director: Wes Andersen
Starring: Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray

When it comes to making a film of exceptional substance and style, The Royal Tenenbaums is arguably the gold standard. American auteur Wes Andersen is the king of meticulous detail and in this ensemble comedy-drama, he stayed true to what the story’s look and tone demanded.

The Royal TenenbaumsThe film follows three remarkable siblings who garner huge success and acclaim early in life, but experience disenchantment and failure as adults. As the flick touches on family dysfunction, the Stylist points out that Andersen made sure that all 1970s-theme clothes remain consistent throughout the film to show that the Tenenbaums are confined within their past glories.

Even at its most subtle, it seemed fashion on film profoundly added weight to the overall sentiment and emotion of the story.
